If the infantry encounters a particularly tough enemy obstacle, like a bunker or trench, the M10s would advance, destroy the target, and pull back. However, their light armor means they will remain just behind friendly ground troops, out of reach of enemy direct fire weapons. In offensive operations, M10 Bookers will accompany infantry assaulting the front line. The vehicle’s lighter, slimmer profile will also make it more tactically mobile, able to cross bridges that can’t bear the load of the 72-ton Abrams tank. Light tanks were originally designed before World War II as scouting vehicles, meant to probe the battlefield and use their speed and mobility to locate the enemy. The Army is quick to point out that although the M10 looks like a miniature tank, it is not in fact a light tank. The M10 firing its 105-millimeter gun during trials, 2022.
